City Information
A microcosm of British history, York has been an important city since the Romans arrived nearly 2000 years ago. York’s many-layered history is preserved in the great variety of buildings which line its ancient winding streets, encircled by the city walls. But York is much more than just a museum. Today, it is a thriving, modern city of about 175,000 people catering for the cultural and commercial needs of a widely spread population. York is big enough to feel cosmopolitan but small enough not to feel overwhelming, offering students all the attractions of a small city - restaurants, cafés, clubs, cinemas, theatres, concerts, exhibitions and events -in a safe and attractive environment.
Situated almost exactly half way between London and Edinburgh, York is relatively easy to reach. Intercity trains take under two hours from London, and two and a half hours from Edinburgh. York is also well served by road links, being accessible from the A1, M1 and the M62. Heathrow Airport can be reached in three and a half hours, and Manchester Airport in two and a half hours. Ferries from Hull and the nearby Leeds-Bradford Airport provide access to mainland Europe.
